Hyperkeratosis in Dog Paws: How Grooming Brings Relief

9/1/2025

Hyperkeratosis is a condition where a dog’s paw pads build up too much keratin, forming thick, crusty growths. These “horn-like” layers don’t just look rough—they can cause discomfort, make walking painful, and even crack or bleed if left untreated.
Some breeds are more prone to it, but any dog can develop paw pad overgrowth. While there’s no permanent cure, consistent grooming care goes a long way in keeping dogs comfortable and mobile.

How We Help at The Blue Hound
When a pup comes in with hyperkeratosis, we use a three-step process to restore comfort:
  1. Deep Clean & Sanitize
We start by gently but thoroughly cleaning the paws to remove dirt, bacteria, and debris that often get caught in the overgrowth. This lowers the risk of infection and gives us a clear look at the pads.
  2. Shave Down the Excess Keratin
Using professional grooming tools, we carefully shave down and/or file the hardened keratin. This exposes the healthy paw pad underneath, relieving pressure and helping dogs walk more naturally.
  3. Apply Heavy Moisturizer
To finish, we apply a rich paw-safe balm to soften and protect the pads. This helps prevent cracking and keeps the pads supple between grooms.

The Transformation
The difference is night and day. Before, paws often look rough, uneven, and uncomfortable. After, pads are smooth, hydrated, and ready to support healthy movement. Many dogs immediately walk more comfortably once that excess keratin is removed.

Ongoing Care for Owners
  • Check your dog’s paws regularly—especially if they’re prone to thickening.
  • Keep up with moisturizing at home using a vet-approved paw balm.
  • Schedule regular grooming so overgrowth is managed before it causes pain.

When to See a Vet
If paw pads are bleeding, severely cracked, pain when walking/standing, or showing signs of infection, veterinary care is needed alongside grooming maintenance.
