A calm, well-mannered pup makes life easier at home and during grooming visits. One of the most useful skills you can teach is the “Place” command—teaching your dog to go to a bed, mat, or defined spot and stay there until released. This simple behavior can transform chaotic moments into calm ones. Why “Place” Matters
1. Introduce the Spot Pick a mat, bed, or blanket. Encourage your dog to step onto it. The second they do, mark the behavior (“Yes!” or clicker) and reward. 2. Build Duration Once they know stepping onto the spot earns a reward, begin extending the time they stay there. Start with a second or two, then gradually increase. 3. Add the Cue When your dog is consistently going to the spot, introduce the word “Place” and/or a hand signal. Say it once, guide them if needed, and reward when they respond. 4. Practice Everywhere Dogs don’t automatically generalize commands. Practice “Place” in different rooms, outside, and with mild distractions. This teaches them to hold the command no matter what’s happening around them. Groomer’s Tip Practicing “Place” at home makes grooming appointments smoother and safer. A dog who’s used to calmly staying in one spot learns to be more relaxed on grooming tables or in waiting areas. It’s one of the best ways to reduce stress for your pup and everyone involved.
