Why Matting Is More Serious Than Most Dog Owners Realize

Matting is one of the most common grooming challenges seen in dogs with longer or curly coats.  While many people think mats are simply tangled fur, they can actually become a serious skin issue if left untreated.

What Causes Matting
Matting forms when loose hair becomes trapped in the coat and begins twisting together. This commonly occurs in areas where friction happens, including:
  • behind the ears
  • under the legs
  • around the collar
  • around the tail
  • along the belly
Curly coats and dense double coats are particularly prone to matting.

Why Mats Can Be Painful
When mats tighten, they pull on the skin beneath them. This can cause:
  • skin irritation
  • bruising
  • trapped moisture
  • infections
Severe matting can even restrict air circulation to the skin.  Veterinary sources often note that matting can hide skin wounds, parasites, or infections beneath the coat.

How to Prevent Matting
The best prevention methods include:
  • regular brushing
  • routine grooming appointments
  • maintaining a consistent grooming schedule
Professional groomers can safely remove loose hair and manage tangles before they become painful mats.

When Grooming Helps Most
Once matting becomes tight near the skin, brushing alone may not safely remove it. Groomers use specialized tools and techniques to address matting while protecting the skin.

Regular grooming at The Blue Hound helps prevent matting before it becomes uncomfortable for your dog. If your pup’s coat is starting to tangle, we’re always happy to help keep it healthy and manageable.
